Unlocking the Scent: How to Get the Best Fragrance Throw from Your Soy Candle
Compartir
You light your beautiful Ritter House of Scent soy candle, anticipating its lovely fragrance filling the room... but the scent seems faint, or maybe not as strong as you expected. What gives? Is it the soy wax?
While it's true that soy wax, due to its natural composition and lower melting point, can sometimes release fragrance more subtly than paraffin wax, a weak "hot throw" (the scent released while burning) isn't always the wax's fault. Often, the issue lies in how the candle is being burned.
The good news is, you can significantly influence how well your soy candle releases its fragrance! Here’s how to optimize the scent throw and get the most aromatic experience:
Achieve a Full Melt Pool (This is #1!)
The Science |
Fragrance evaporates from the surface of the melted wax pool. The larger the liquid surface area, the more fragrance can be released into the air. |
What to Do |
Especially on the first burn, but also on subsequent burns, let the candle burn long enough for the melted wax to reach all the way (or very nearly all the way) to the edges of the container. This maximizes the scent-releasing surface. (Remember the 1 hour per inch diameter rule?) |
The Impact |
Burning a candle for only short periods creates a small melt pool, limiting fragrance release and potentially causing tunneling, which further hinders performance. |
Consider the Room Size
Be Realistic | A small votive or single-wick candle simply doesn't have a large enough melt pool to powerfully scent a large, open-concept living room or a room with high ceilings. |
Match Candle to Space |
Use larger candles (like multi-wick ones) or multiple smaller candles strategically placed for larger areas. Save smaller candles for bathrooms, bedrooms, or home offices. |
Banish Drafts
The Disruption | Just like drafts cause uneven burning and soot, they also disperse the fragrance erratically, making it seem weaker. |
Find Still Air | Place your burning candle away from open windows, fans, air conditioning vents, and even areas where people walk by frequently. |
Proper Wick Care = Better Scent
The Connection | A correctly trimmed wick (around 1/4 inch) creates the optimal flame size. |
Why it Matters |
An optimal flame heats the wax pool efficiently to release fragrance. A flame that's too small won't create a large enough or hot enough melt pool. A flame that's too large (from an untrimmed wick) can actually burn off the fragrance too quickly before it disperses. |
The Habit |
Trim your wick before every burn. |
Strategic Placement
Think Central: Placing a candle in a more central location (safely, of course!) allows air currents in the room to gently circulate the fragrance, rather than having it trapped in a corner.
What About the Candle Itself?
At Ritter House of Scent, we do our part too! We use:
High-Quality Fragrance Oils |
Specifically chosen and tested for strong performance in soy wax. |
Optimal Fragrance Load |
We use fragrance concentrations (typically 6-10% for soy ) designed to provide a great scent experience without compromising the burn. |
Cure Time |
Candles smell stronger after they've "cured". We follow the industry standards and cured our candles for 2 full weeks! Allowing the fragrance and wax to fully bind. Your candle has already been cured before it reaches you! |
The Takeaway
While soy wax might release scent differently than paraffin, you have significant control over the hot throw. By ensuring a full melt pool, choosing the right size candle for your space, avoiding drafts, and trimming your wick, you can maximize the beautiful fragrance of your Ritter House of Scent soy candle.
